We call it lost art.
Although he wants to learn how to draft on the computer, Patrick has been drafting by hand his entire architectural career! Don`t worry though, our construction plans are digitalized for our projects. He only hand-drafts the initial schematic floor plan, and does a 3D freehand sketch of his overall vision. You can even see a few examples pinned up on his cork board!
Since it is so time consuming, unfortunately (and fortunately) with CAD software, not many practicing architects and designers still draft by hand nowadays - hence why we call it a lost art...
Challenged with many architectural style requests along the years, Patrick has always loved to find inspiration in his travels, his library of many books, Instagram, or even driving around in the neighborhood.

Let’s talk about the Pyramid house, part two!
Last time we talked about why we couldn’t connect the new structure to the existing. Today we’re talking about another code issue we faced and what this room eventually became.
We weren’t allowed to touch more 50% of the house, or it would trigger us to tear down and start new. So we had to move the primary rooms like the kitchen, family and dining room into the new structure.
Luckily, since we couldn’t do 3 stories here, but were able to have a large maximum height, we had 11’ of ceiling height to play with in the new great room.
In this great room, off the kitchen, which used to be the second floor deck, we designed it to be the dining room. Surrounded by floor to ceiling windows, this great room truly is a beauty!

As we are preparing to travel next week to our biannual ACBC meeting, I figured let’s do a refresh…
Especially since we have three new members since we shared in our highlight many moons ago. We have proudly brought on @cardinalcrestkc from Kansas City, @nsbuilders from Boston and @gallaghercollc from Seattle!
Patrick and Michael have been a part of this group for 20+ years. Liam and myself have only started attending since 2021. There is MUCH to be learned in these meetings. We are the ultimate sponges trying to soak up all the information we possibly can.
